Whether Amsterdam\, Berlin or New York\, he looks for ways to capture the essence of the city — not as a tourist\, but as someone who immerses himself in its rhythm and structure. \nIn 1988 and 1989\, with permission from and accompanied by employees of Nederlandse Spoorwegen\, he walked along the railway tracks of Amsterdam. From there\, he photographed the city from a different\, quiet perspective: without the bustle of the streets\, with a clear view of the changing surroundings. Sounds such as passing cars\, children’s voices or music from open windows formed a background symphony that connected the city. \nFor this new series — thirty years later — Spaans once again walked the route between Central Station and Cruquiuskade\, this time with permission from ProRail. The city has changed: noise barriers close off certain areas\, trees and shrubs have grown\, and buildings have been restored or replaced. Yet his approach remains the same: quick\, intuitive shots that capture the dynamics of the city\, without searching for perfect compositions. \nThe two Amsterdam series connect with Spaans’ earlier projects\, such as New York from the Yards: The Real Line of New York (1986). There\, he photographed the city from subway yards: large\, enclosed open spaces where he could observe the raw\, unpolished side of New York. As in Amsterdam\, the aim was to capture the city from a distance in order to better understand its urban fabric. \nWhether Amsterdam\, Berlin or New York\, the subject is always the same: the city as a living organism. \nPeter Spaans – Biography (abridged)\nPeter Spaans (1953) is a Dutch artist\, photographer and video artist. His work includes photography\, installations\, books\, collages and video\, with a strong focus on urban environments\, architecture and everyday life.\nSpaans has exhibited worldwide\, including in New York\, Paris\, Glasgow\, Copenhagen\, Turin and Vancouver\, and has worked with renowned curators such as Okwui Enwezor\, Hou Hanru and Jan Hoet. \n

The concept behind The Stack is as simple as it is ambitious: by bringing top talent together under one roof rather than leaving them in silos\, we create a flywheel for innovation. With a target of eventually hosting more than 200 companies\, The Stack aims to drive the development of AI applications and become the largest AI hub in the Netherlands. \n“There will be private offices\, as well as flexible workspaces\, communal areas\, catering facilities and an events hall. We also want to organise meet-ups to bring together all the sub-communities from Amsterdam’s tech scene\,” said director Esther Bisschop in *Het Parool*. \nThe new AI hub will be situated right next to another new start-up hub run by the Swedish company Norrsken House\, which is also set to open its doors in September at the Van Gendt Hallen in Oostenburg. DESCRIPTION:Screening of the film Drijfland. A documentary about Robert Jasper Grootveld’s Floating Gardens (Nico Boink\, 2025\, 64 minutes. Spoken in Dutch\, with English subtitles)\, followed by a discussion with the director and the Vlottenbouwers van Amsterdam. \n📅 Wednesday\, 30 September 2026\n🕗 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.\n📍 De Witte Boei\, Kleine Wittenburgerstraat 201\n🎟️ Admission is free\, but capacity is limited. \nDrijfland is about the floating gardens of Robert Jasper Grootveld. Filmmaker Nico Boink began filming in late 1999\, when these garden islands were being built in the workshop according to Grootveld’s design. Grootveld had already been developing the concept since the 1960s. The film shows the power of collaboration\, aimed at preserving the flora and fauna of this unique biotope. Past and present intertwine\, and Robert Jasper Grootveld — an extraordinary person\, visionary and provocateur — is strongly present\, as is his legacy. \n \nThe film portrays an aspect of Amsterdam’s underground culture: unconventional\, gentle and straightforward\, and often hilarious. It also takes an in-depth look at the construction and maintenance of the Floating Gardens in the Wittenburgervaart canal. \n\n  \nAfter the screening\, we will talk with the director and the Vlottenbouwers van Amsterdam about the future of the Floating Gardens in the Wittenburgervaart. The Floating Gardens have a permit until February 2027. What will happen after that is not yet known.
