The City of Amsterdam has made its decision: the future neighborhood square in Oostenburg will be named Tonia Stieltjesplein. The proposal came from Lex Gründeman, representing Stichting Over de Brug and the Buurtkamer. We’re proud that the name we submitted was chosen.
Who was Tonia Stieltjes?
Tonia Stieltjes (1881–1932) was born on Czaar Peterstraat. She grew up in this neighborhood and made history as the first Black female trade unionist in the Netherlands. She worked as a domestic servant, fought for better working conditions, and posed for well-known painters. Her father was born into slavery, later gained his freedom, and worked as a sailor for many years.
Tonia’s life connects deeply to the history of this neighborhood—a place where art, solidarity, and activism have always met. The name Tonia Stieltjesplein honors that legacy.
In collaboration with the community
The name was chosen after discussions, workshops, and a quick survey with residents, local entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. Over twenty name suggestions were submitted. The city reviewed them all. The Advisory Committee on Public Space Naming (ANOR) gave a positive recommendation for our proposal. The city’s Executive Board then made the official decision.
Why this name?
ANOR assesses names using clear criteria. A name must:
- fit the neighborhood and surroundings;
- not be controversial;
- be easy to pronounce and remember;
- contribute to an inclusive public space.
Tonia Stieltjes meets all these conditions. And she deserves a place in the city’s landscape.
When will the square be built?
Construction of the square will only begin once the building work on plots 9, 10, 11A/B, and 12 is complete. That’s expected in 2028. Until then, the area will remain a construction site.
Get to know Tonia better
Buurtkamer Over de Brug will soon organize a public event about the life of Tonia Stieltjes. Everyone is welcome to come listen, learn, and join the conversation. The date will be announced soon on our website.
