Year in Review Over de Brug 2025
A Turbulent Year
Construction activity on Oostenburg continued throughout the year.
And it is far from finished.
Residents regularly faced disruption from construction traffic, large waste trucks, buildings going back into scaffolding, and cranes carrying out repair work.
The year also began with a great deal of controversy around the Werkspoorhal.
The owner wanted to install padel courts.
This directly contradicted what residents had been promised.
Many residents spoke up, shared ideas, and filed objections.
The outcome: the original promises will not be fulfilled.
Instead, BigGym will move in, with an opening planned for spring 2026 after two years of vacancy.
In terms of green space, the year was calmer.
Weeds had room to grow.
In November, work finally started on greening the concrete square near the Zonnewendebrug, based on the residents' 10-point Green Plan.
A great result.
Residents of the VOC-kade took strong initiative to add more greenery and received support from the municipality.
Roest opened its doors, and the INIT building emptied out.
The Oosterlingen reached its highest point.
Before everything is completed, it will be 2028.

Over de Brug
Stichting Over de Brug works to support a social, connected, and resilient Oostenburg and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The Buurtkamer plays a central role.
It brings together residents and organisations that can support one another and improve neighbourhood liveability.
The Buurtkamer also offers space to:
- take initiative
- work and participate
- meet others
- hold meetings
- learn from one another
Initiatives come from residents.
Over de Brug facilitates them.
In 2025, there was a lot happening.
Below is a short overview and a look ahead to 2026.
What Residents Think
At the start of 2025, 285 residents completed a survey about Oostenburg.
Many residents rated neighbourhood liveability as insufficient.
The overall score was 5.5.
Main areas for improvement:
- Greening: 2.6
- Public space: 3.1
- Use of the Werkspoorhal: 3.4
- Nuisance from the municipal yard: 3.5
Based on these results:
- An "Oploscafé" on greening was organised in May
- A neighbourhood walk took place
- Several meetings were held on the Werkspoorhal, public space, and nuisance from the municipal yard
Open Drop-In
An open drop-in was organised twice days a week again this year.
Visitor numbers remain limited.
The neighbourhood is still developing.
We regularly review whether the open drop-in adds value and how it can better serve the community.
Volunteers
We focused on recruiting and connecting volunteers through:
- volunteer meetings
- volunteer policy development
Special attention went to recruiting and working with volunteers who do not speak Dutch.
Contact with Residents
Four newsletters were published this year with announcements and reports of activities.
They are well read by around 500 subscribers.
We also communicate via:
- the Residents of Oostenburg app group
- neighbourhood magazines: Petersburgjournaal, 1018Magazine
- Stadgenoot's Ons Oostenburg
Several times, we went into the neighbourhood with a mobile coffee cart to talk with residents.
The neighbourhood continues to grow, with new residents arriving regularly.
Building cohesion and familiarity requires frequent personal contact.
Engaging the large group of expats remains a major challenge.
Supporting Other Initiatives
- Voluntour
In May, together with Dock, VCA, and residents, we organised a tour for expats along social and community organisations where volunteer work is possible.
- Neighbour Day (Burendag)
We supported the Buurtcomité Oostelijke Eilanden with organisation and programming.
- Accessibility Week
We contributed to the organisation together with Prisma, Czaar51, and Clientbelang.
Programming
Four talk shows were organised:
- 27 February: Residents Speak
- 24 April: Reuse of Industrial Factory Halls 1
Masterclass with architect André van Stigt
- 26 June: Reuse of Industrial Factory Halls 2
The Van Gendt Hallen and the Werkspoorkathedraal in Utrecht
- 25 September: Tonia Stieltjes Square, in cooperation with Stadgenoot
The talk shows proved effective in exploring area development topics in depth with residents.
Each event filled the Buurtkamer.
Three exhibitions by and about residents were organised:
- Convenient Freeze — soft textile sculptures by Tzvi Gutter
- Tonia Stieltjes — portraits by Jan Sluijters, Iris Kensmil, and Brian Elstak
- On the Waterfront — photographs by Adrienne Norman

"Zij aan Zij aan Zet"
Research shows that many women in the neighbourhood are not in paid employment.
Some have never worked.
Others stopped working some time ago.
Many face barriers such as:
- physical or social challenges
- limited education or work experience
- insufficient language skills
This group, often with a migration background, also faces exclusion in the labour market.
Through the project Zij aan Zij aan Zet, we support women towards work or education, preferably in or around Oostenburg.
This year, several women took steps towards paid work and/or education.

Looking Ahead to 2026
Major changes are coming.
Many new residents will move in, especially at Noorderzon and the Liesbeth List House.
BigGym will open in the Werkspoorhal.
The Drift Museum will open in the Van Gendt Hallen.
There may finally be a restaurant on the corner near the Storkbrug.
Vacant ground-floor spaces may be filled.
Over de Brug will start working on programming for the Werkspoorhal.
A small working group of residents will be formed.
A Freedom Meal at the VOC-kade seems like a good idea.
A lot will happen on Oostenburg next year.
We hope you will join in — as a volunteer or as a participant.
Happy 2026
Will you join us for the New Year's reception at the Oosterkerk on 13 January?
If not, we hope to see you sometime in the Buurtkamer.
We wish all residents, visitors, and everyone working on Oostenburg happy holidays and a very happy 2026.
